Errata and Additions: From Home and From Away

Volume 1 From Home and From Away: The Descendants of Charles MacKinnon and Christina Cameron

Many thanks to all those who have let me know about errors, with particular thanks to Leo MacDonald of O’Leary, P.E.I. who has done a wonderful job of cross-referencing and querying discrepancies between entries. My apologies to anyone to whom I inadvertently gave a birthdate that pre-dates their parents’ marriage. In the on-line version of the errata and additions, I am only giving the birth year for new additions to the clan, and birth dates are referenced by what page the correct date is located on.

2011 – Many new resources have become available, especially through the LDS site, Family Search.org, which includes images of Montana marriages, Massachusetts deaths, Delaware births, and information on New Jersey births and marriages.

2014 – The Charlottetown Guardian, from 1890-1964, is now available online through www.island newspapers.ca. I am gradually going through the paper looking for any reference to family, and adding notations to this list.

Revised 4 June 2015

Cowan Rankin MacKinnon

p. 28 # 2 – Cowan MacKinnon’s death date should read 9 July 1894.

p. 28, 29 #8 – Neil was sole agent in PEI for Dr. White’s New Hair Grower Co. of Chicago (Guardian 22 June 1899). Neil MacKinnon donated 30 boxes of English Ointment to the P.E.I. contingent of soldiers that left to fight in South Africa (Guardian 27 October 1899).  He was honoured by the Paris Exhibition of 1900 with an ‘honorable mention’ in applied chemistry for his exhibit of McKinnon’s English Ointment, shown at the Exhibition. (Guardian 7 November 1900).  He won $75 in gold from Oxien Company of Augusta, Maine, for high sales of their pills to help “the nerves” (Guardian 21 October 1900).

p. 28, 38 #12 – Angus MacKinnon married for a second time on 23 November, 1915 in Truro, Nova Scotia.  His second wife was Mary Armour, daughter of William and Catherine Russell, born in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia in about 1848.  By all accounts, the marriage was not a success.

In 1892, Angus was badly injured when a log fell on his leg, as he was overseeing the construction of a breakwater at Brae Harbour. (Guardian March 4, 1892).  By 1894, Angus had started a lumber mill in Gaspé. (Guardian October 1894). Reported on 15 August 1899, Angus was shipping strawberries picked locally. In August 1899, Angus completed the Strathcona Hotel on Granville Street in Summerside, a 3 story building with 3 continuous bays on the front and south side, and 24 rooms.  He leased it to Capt. J.S. Allan of the Terrace House. (Guardian August 1899)  A home that he owned in Coleman, occupied by the mill foreman, burnt to the ground on November 12, 1908. (Guardian November 16, 1908)

p. 29 #14 – John Yeo retired on 31 January 1918.  According to his obituary, he started service with the railway on 5 December 1876 as a fireman, becoming a locomotive engineer in June 1881. (Guardian June 8, 1923)

p. 30 #20 – James Artemas MacKinnon’s birth date should read 26 March 1871.

p. 32, 45 # 27 – Cowan Rankin MacKinnon married Annie Alexina Stewart, daughter of James B. Stewart and Catharine McNevin on 16 June 1887 in Boston, Ma. Rankin was described as a blacksmith and Annie as a dressmaker. The marriage is filed under the surname ‘Kinnon’. Annie was born 10 July 1859 in Argyle Shore, P.E.I. She was buried in Argyle Shore Cemetery, and her mother was later buried there with her, although her parents had moved to Wyoming by that time.

p. 32, 48 #30 – Mary Ellen MacKinnon died 1 November 1955 in Toronto, Ontario.

p. 33, 48 #33 – In May 1908, Major purchased a steam saw to replace the barn destroyed by fire in autumn 1907.  He planned to build a structure 167 feet long and 52 feet high. (Guardian May 21, 1908).

The Washington state death records list the death of James Clark, son of John Clark and Annie MacKinnon, who died 17 June 1951.  This is the persona that Major adopted in Washington state.

p. 33, 49  #34 – Pope MacKinnon’s birth order is unsure because his birth date is seen as various different dates.  The most reliable birth date is 1877, but could be as early as 1872, which was the date I originally had. After locating the more likely date, I omitted to change his birth order. His draft registration card lists his name as ‘Pope Douglas William McKinnon’.

p. 33, 50 #35 – Elizabeth (Lizzie) MacKinnon died 23 January 1958 (1958 diary of Helen MacKinnon McCarey).

p. 41,65 #60 – Leverett Flewelling’s parents were James L. Flewelling and Bertha Willet

p. 46 – New information indicates that the farm photo is not of Rosehill Farm, but is more likely Rankin MacKinnon’s farm in Albany, P.E.I.

p. 46 #76 – Margaret (Maggie) Gamble married Robert Hudson MacAusland in about 1909, and had a daughter, Eva Pearl MacAusland, on 1 October 1910 in Wellington, P.E.I.  It appears that the correct date for Maggie’s death is 20 February 1911, which would mean that the date on her tombstone (1912) is inaccurate.  Maggie is not listed in the 1911 census, taken in April 1911.  Eva MacAusland was brought up by her grandparents, Henry Crawford MacAusland and Fanny Barlow MacAusland in Lot 16.  She married Robert Garfield Day in 1930.  They had 5 children, Margaret Blanche Day (married Raymond Howatt), Marjorie Day (married Bruce Conrad), Neta Ruth Day (married Sherman MacCaull), Linda Day (married Donald MacIntosh) and Gordon Day (married 1. She married Helmut Hartleb, and has four daughters Mary Susan (married Jacques Dubois), Heather Ann (married Michel Lortie), Morag Lynn (married Douglas Clark), and Gwenyth Jane. Joan now lives in Windsor, Ontario

He was an insurance salesman, and later a fireman at Concord Hospital for 15 years. At one point, his mother was arrested for bootlegging, but Melvin took the rap and went to prison. According to his step-grandson, he wrote ‘The Prisoner Song’, recorded by Eddy Arnold and Hank Snow, among others (although credit is given to Guy Massey). Here are the lyrics:

Oh, I wish I had someone to love me, Yes, someone to call me their own

Oh, I wish I had someone to live with ‘Cause I’m tired of living alone.

Oh, please meet me tonight in the moonlight, Oh, please meet me tonight all alone

For I have a sad story to tell you It’s a story that’s never been told.

I’ll be carried to the new jail tomorrow, Leaving my poor darling alone

With the cold prison bars all around me, And my head on a pillow of stone.

Now, I have a grand ship on the ocean, All mounted with silver and gold

And before my poor darling would suffer, Oh, that ship would be anchored and sold.

Now if I had the wings like an angel, Over these prison walls I would fly

And I’d fly to the arms of my darling, And there I’d be willing to die…

Ethel had been orphaned, and had been previously married. She had a daughter, Marjorie, whose left her newborn son, Benjamin Mahoney, with Ethel and Melvin, after he was born. Benjamin remembers Melvin as very patient and fun-loving, but liked his drink. Melvin died 9 January 1981 after suffering two strokes. He is buried in Blossom Hill Cemetery, Concord, N.H.
